The head of your mathematical department is full of beans. That book does not become useful until Course 3. The book covers Life Contingencies and Risk Theory, which are a PORTION of Course 3. It doesn't cover the material on Course 1 or 2; it assumes you already know it. For course 1, any good calculus and any good probability book will do.
